Hugo Shelley Light

Born in Genoa, Italy, in 1834, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the 68 Light Infantry in 1853. He served as part of the 68 LI's bodyguard to Lord Raglan in the early months of the Crimean War, before returning home ill. He was personally presented with his Crimean War Medal by Queen Victoria on 18 May 1855 at Horse Guards, before returning to the Crimea in August 1855. He was promoted to Captain in 1857 and fought in the New Zealand War, 1864- 66. He became a Major in 1870, but retired by sale of his commission in 1871. Hugo Light died in 1894 and is buried at Brompton Oratory, London.
